Eastwars the historic center of Caorle there is a wide lagoon territory which shows its great beauty in sunny days ater the bad weather caused by the Bora . An unpolluted territory rich in picturesque “casoni”, closely-planted beds of reeds and water that let catch a glimpse of bright muddy depth, placidly framed by the Alpine peaks which go from Veneto to Istria, reaching the opposite shore of the Adriatic sea where it seams to perceive the outline of the gentle tops, among Orsera and Rovigno.

The “Casoni”
The casone of which Caorle is thick with is the typical construction of the lagoon and valley areas in Veneto and Friuli, intended to accomodate whole families during the fishing at valley and still in use in accordance with their original destination, up to the 60s. They are formed by one only room, elliptic planned, covered with ditch reeds to form a sloping roof. Inside there is an earthen floor, little and low windows and a fireplace. An important group is located between the Fishermen island and the area along the embankment called Via dei Casoni, from where you can admire the lagoon and its great beauty. This is a cycle track (bicycles available beside the Orologio reception) that goes towards the area of Falconera, at the end of the Trieste promenade and arrives to the picturesque Fishermen island, next to the Bocca di Volta.
The area is easily reachable by boat, passing through the Orologio channel up to the openable bridge Saetta. From here you enter the omonymous channel (littoral of Veneto) which after some hundred meters flows into the Lemene river and then into the Nicesolo channel in the Bocca di Volta, entering at last in the lagoon of Caorle.
■ San Gaetano
Sailing up northwards the Lemene river from the Bocca di Volta you arrive to the little hamlet of San Gaetano, where many archaeological prehistoric finds were discovered. Particularly along the river, parallel to the beautiful Franchetti farm complex, formed by a hall and a derelict chapel and other farm hauses, ther is a landing with a trattoria.
As a matter of interest: the american writer Hemingway stayed several times in this romantic place, which has been immortalized in the pages of “ Al di là dal fiume tra gli alberi”( Beyond the river.....) with the description of the hunting scenes set in the lagoon of Caorle.
■
The "Casoni" of Lignano area
The Casoni are scattered almost everywhere in the lagoon territory. There are some of them in very good conditions particularly going along the coast of Veneto, towards Lignano, in the Valle Vecchia, next to the embankment of Falconera and the confluence of of the Lugugnana channel to the coast.
■ Ca Corniani
Sailing up through the Livenza immediately out of Caorle we arrive to a balance bridge that can not be opened. Beyond that bridge there is Cà Corniani. Here we find a noteworthy rural architectonic complex of the nineteenth century, still in use and belonging to the Assicurazioni Generali.
It is a structure shaped like a horseshoe, with the open side oriented to the west towards the country.
An elegant three floors hall draws the southern bundary line of the complex. In parallel with the Livenza river we find a compact sequence of tenant farmers and sharecroppers housings which continues on the northern arcaded side. The Assicurazioni Generali reclaimed this territory and brought into it the culture of wine. Yet they built a recently restructured modern winery next to the housings.
In Cà Corniani ther is a nice and pretty trattoria , a family businness, next to the Falconera embankment and the confluence of the Lugugnana channel to the coast . This place is immortalized in Hemingway’s “ Beyond the river, among the trees”, in the description of the haunting scenes set in the lagoon of Caorle.
