The most significant monuments of the town, and among the most beautiful of Veneto, are the Romanesque duomo dedicated to protomartyr Saint Stephan and its bell tower, symbol of Caorle, which strikes with its unususl cylindrical shape, typical of the Ravenna style. The monumental S.Stephan’s duomo was built in XIth century and has its diocese which has been suppressed during the Napoleonic age (1807). The well proportioned inner space is a basilical design with nave and two aisles and apses. Eighteen beautiful columns and pillars line the space at regular intervals and culminate with elegant Byzantine and classic capitals, taken from the neighbouring of Roman Concordia . Among the interesting works of art kept in this temple there is the gold Ancona by the school of Paolo Veneziano and the Last Supper attributed to Gregorio Lazzarini. As a matter of interest: according to a medieval tradition, in the duomo of Caorle are kept very precious relics such as the jars of the Wedding of Caanan. The front has visible warm bricks ; two bas-reliefs of the Byzantin age are set on the two sides of the portal. The other jewel of this extraordinary monumental complex is the magnificent cylindrical bell tower (1065) which also has visible bricks. It is 48 meters high and stands light thanks to a sure play of solids and voids formed by the windows with one and two lights arranged over the shaft and a circular loggia.

Other little jewel of Caorle is the eighteenth-century church dedicated to the Madonna of the Angel whose bell tower facing the sea is a conspicuous point provided with a white lighted lighthouse. It is located on a little peninsula and its front with arcades is set towards west. To the left of it there is the bay of the Sacheta, the ancient port of Caorle that harboured the bragozzi for centuries; to its right instead a long breakwater has been put for protection and is made with rocks of Euganean trachyte. Since 1993 those rocks have been sculpted by several artists who have been creating the particular promenade of the Living Rocks. Yet the Madonnina, the protectress of the fishermen is above all the most valuable place for local devotees who with their lively character give this seaside town that unique tone far from being artificial.

To complete the visit of Caorle’s ancient area you shuold go throug the calli and campielli, with their typical historic architectures, which have lagoon origin and characterized by simple, harmonious and gaudy coloured volumetries. And the lively fishing port that harbours the indefatigable activity of the second fleet of Veneto and gives this little town an extremely lively and authentic tone. Caorle, where traditional activities go side by side with modern touristic culture.
